Designing and building secure, cost-optimized, and ultra-reliable cloud architectures on Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of the most exciting parts of modern engineering. But let's be honest: AWS Well-Architected Reviews can sometimes feel a bit tedious. 🥱
Traditionally, reviews mean filling out massive questionnaires, digging through spreadsheets, and doing audits weeks (or months!) after your code is already running.
Well, we have some fantastic news! Today, we are super excited to introduce the AWS Well-Architected Reviewer in FloDraw! Now you can design, review, and govern your cloud architectures in real-time, right on your visual canvas. Let's make cloud best-practices fun and effortless! ✨
🌟 The 6 Pillars of Cloud Excellence
The AWS Well-Architected Framework is your roadmap to building amazing systems. FloDraw evaluates your visual layouts across all six pillars to ensure they are production-ready:
- Security 🔒: Lock down your data, set up encryption boundaries, and protect your assets.
- Reliability ⚓: Ensure your services are resilient, self-healing, and recover gracefully from outages.
- Performance Efficiency ⚡: Scale resources smoothly and match your users' demands perfectly.
- Cost Optimization 💰: Stop paying for idle resources and find the most cost-effective hosting setups.
- Operational Excellence ⚙️: Monitor, run, and continuously improve your system's deployment workflows.
- Sustainability 🌿: Make your cloud setup greener by minimizing its carbon and resource footprints.
🛠️ How It Works: Instant Visual Audits
With a single click, FloDraw combines your nodes, edges, and subnets with specialized architectural rules to give you a full compliance sweep in seconds!
1. Simple Minimum Detail Check (No Waste!) 📏
To ensure your review has enough context for a high-quality audit, your diagram must meet a quick baseline:
- At least 10 nodes (components, databases, subnets, or clients).
- At least 6 connections (the data flows showing how services interact).
- At least 1 AWS resource node (so the reviewer knows it's an AWS design!).
If your diagram is still in the early sketching phase, the setup panel will cheerfully let you know what is missing and keep the review button disabled, saving your precious credits until you are ready!

2. Choose Your Pillars 🎯
You don't have to review everything at once! Select exactly which pillars you want to audit. Doing a quick security sweep? Just check "Security". Cleaning up your budget? Select "Cost Optimization". Customizing your audit has never been this easy!
3. Beautiful Radial Scorecards & Findings 📊
When the audit finishes, you'll be greeted by an instant visual dashboard showing radial gauges for your selected pillars. Underneath, findings are neatly organized with color-coded severity tags:
- 🔴 CRITICAL: Architectural risks that need immediate attention (e.g., placing an RDS database in a public subnet).
- 🟡 WARNING: Sub-optimal setups that can be improved (e.g., running tasks without a Load Balancer).
- 🔵 INFO: Awesome enhancement ideas (e.g., using Amazon ElastiCache to speed up performance).

4. Overwrite Protection: Keep Your Work Safe! 🛡️
Ready to document your findings? Export your review directly to the Spec Writer tab to generate a beautiful specification or ADR (Architecture Decision Record).
To make sure you never accidentally overwrite existing work, FloDraw shows a fancy confirmation modal. It lets you choose whether to Append Content (keeping both documents separated by a clean divider) or Overwrite Document.
🎯 Spotting Issues Before They Cost You
Catching architectural slip-ups early is a developer superpower. The reviewer helps you spot common mistakes before you ever provision a single resource:
- VPC Boundary Misalignments: Making sure databases are kept safe in private subnets, far away from public internet entry points.
- Single Points of Failure: Recommending Multi-AZ setups, read replicas, and fallback SQS queues to keep your systems running smoothly.
- Cost Efficiency Opportunities: Pointing out where you can easily swap standard VM instances for lightweight, serverless AWS Lambda functions.
